Though mining is one of the major industries, other components play a role in Sydney’s high drug use rates. One of these being the environment. Sydney is a major location for city life, which includes a higher population, and because of the diverse community there is an increase in accessibility to illicit drugs and alcohol compared to other areas.

The club and nightlife scene in Australia is also foundational grounds where many adolescents and young adults experiment and begin using drugs. This is also a prime location for accidental overdose, and reflects with the high accidental overdose rates.
